De Königssee wordt vaak vergeleken met een Noors fjord, niet helemaal ten onrechte: het meer is 8 km lang, amper 2 km breed, aan beide zijden omgeven door kliffen tot 2000 m hoog. Bovendien maakt het meer deel uit van het immense Nationalpark Berchtesgaden.
