Tegernsee is de naam van zowel het meer als het kleine stadje met ongeveer vierduizend inwoners aan het meer. Tegernsee werd in 756 gesticht door benedictijnermonniken uit Sankt Gallen in Zwitserland. Van de elfde tot de achttiende eeuw was de abdij van grote betekenis op cultureel gebied. Het klooster werd in 1803 verbouwd tot een kasteel en werd een landhuis voor mensen van koninklijken bloede. Gedeelten zijn voor het publiek toegankelijk, zoals de Kapitelsaal die tegelijk een onderdeel van het lokale museum vormt.
