De Edersee-dam werd in de nacht van 16 op 17 mei 1943 door bommen vernietigd door de Britten als onderdeel van operatie Chastise. Dit veroorzaakte enorme verwoestingen. Een vloedgolf met golven van 6-8 meter hoog trok door de vallei tot 30 km stroomafwaarts.
