Peenemünde-West

Peenemünde-West, later experiment site of the Luftwaffe Karlshagen, was a testing site of the Luftwaffe of the Wehrmacht in Peenemünde in the northwest of the island of Usedom, which started its activities in 1938. Already in 1936, the Army Testing Station Peenemünde for the development and testing of ballistic rockets had been established in the immediate vicinity. The "East Works" was under the Army, while the "West Works" was under the Luftwaffe.
Under the supervision of the Schlempp construction group, construction began on various rocket testing stations, port facilities, railway connections, and the airfield as well as the Peenemünde-West testing site. The Luftwaffe testing site was opened on April 1, 1938, and was already substantially completed at that time. Various models and prototypes were tested by the Luftwaffe at the airfield with a paved runway, the launchers, and rocket launch sites until early 1945.
The most famous weapon tested here is the glide bomb Fieseler Fi 103, the predecessor of modern cruise missiles. Experimental launches were conducted from Peenemünde towards the Baltic Sea.
