Brackel werd voor het eerst schriftelijk vermeld op 6 februari 1300 in het oorkondenboek van het klooster St. Michaelis in Lüneburg. Sporen van een bewoning van het grondgebied zijn echter terug te vinden in vondsten die al uit de prehistorie stammen, van de jongere steentijd via de bronstijd tot in de ijzertijd. Hieruit blijkt dat de belangrijkste bewoonde plaatsen niet op de huidige locatie lagen, maar meer in de richting van Quarrendorf en Toppenstedt. Een urnvondst uit de Jastorf-cultuur geeft aan dat er in Brackel al rond 550 tot 400 voor Christus mensen werden begraven.
Op 1 juli 1972 werd de gemeente Thieshope ingelijfd.
