Stiepel is een stadsdeel in het zuiden van Bochum, dat naar het zuidoosten en zuiden wordt begrensd door de Ruhr naar Witten en Hattingen. Het totale oppervlakte van Stiepel is 12,46 km², waarmee het het grootste stadsdeel van Bochum is. Aan de Kemnader Straße 302 a bevindt zich met 196 m boven NAP het hoogste punt van Bochum. Bij de dorpskerk bereikt Stiepel een hoogte van 110 m boven NAP, aan de Ruhr 70 m boven NAP, waardoor er over een korte afstand grote hoogteverschillen bestaan. De belangrijkste verkeersader is de Kemnader Straße, die echter tot huisnummer 39 in het stadsdeel Weitmar ligt.
