Emmendingen is een stad in het zuidwesten van Baden-Württemberg, ongeveer 14 km ten noorden van Freiburg im Breisgau. Sinds 1 januari 1973 is Emmendingen een Große Kreisstadt en met 28.466 inwoners de grootste stad en het middelcentrum van de Landkreis Emmendingen. Met de gemeenten Freiamt, Malterdingen, Sexau en Teningen heeft de stad een samenwerkingsovereenkomst afgesloten.
De stad ligt in het Breisgau tussen de voorkeurszone van het Zwarte Woud en de Kaiserstuhl in de Rijnvallei in het noorden van de zogenaamde Freiburger Bucht aan de rivier de Elz op een hoogte van 189 tot 403 meter.
