Greifswald is een gemeente in de Duitse deelstaat Mecklenburg-Voor-Pommeren. Sinds 2011 maakt de stad als Kreisstadt deel uit van het Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald. Tot dan was het een kreisfreie stad. De stad telt 56.685 inwoners. De stad maakte vroeger deel uit van de Hanze. Tegenwoordig heeft ze vooral een regionale functie. In de stad is sinds 1456 de Ernst Moritz Arndt Universiteit gevestigd, een van de oudste universiteiten in Europa.
In Greifswald komen twee aardgaspijplijnen van Nord Stream aan land. Met de levering van Russisch aardgas werd op 8 november 2011 begonnen. De pijplijnen liggen op de bodem van de Oostzee en beginnen bij de Russische plaats Vyborg .
