Düsseldorf is de hoofdstad van de Duitse deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen gelegen aan de Nederrijn, even ten zuiden van het Ruhrgebied. Düsseldorf is een Kreisfreie Stadt. De gemeente telt 604.527 inwoners en heeft een oppervlakte van 217,0 km².
Düsseldorf ligt in het midden van de Rijnvlakte, overwegend aan de rechteroever van de rivier de Rijn. Alleen de wijken Düsseldorf-Oberkassel, Düsseldorf-Niederkassel, Düsseldorf-Heerdt en Düsseldorf-Lörick liggen aan de linker Rijnoever. De stad dankt haar naam aan het riviertje de Düssel, dat hier in de Rijn uitmondt.
