Het Olympiastadion ligt in het westen van Berlijn, in het stadsdeel Westend. Het stadion is onderdeel van het grote Olympiagelände , waartoe verder het Sportforum, olympisch hockeystadion, olympisch zwemstadion, Reitstadion, de Waldbühne, het Maifeld , de beroemde klokkentoren en de Langemarckhalle behoren.
Eerder stond op dezelfde plaats het Duitse Stadion, dat op zijn beurt in 1913 gebouwd was op de plaats van renbaan Grunewald. Het Duitse Stadion was gebouwd voor de Olympische Spelen van 1916, die echter niet doorgingen vanwege de Eerste Wereldoorlog.
