Gesticht in 1245 door gravin Audacia en haar zoon, de latere Graf Gunzelin III von Schwerin. Als een zogenaamde "Jonkvrouwenklooster" diende het als een toevluchtsoord en school voor de dochters van de graven en vazallen van de aangrenzende graafschappen en van patriciërsfamilies uit Lübeck. Tijdens de secularisatie werd het klooster opgeheven in 1552. Daarna werd het gebruikt, onder andere voor graanopslag, als brouwerij, lokale rechtbank, jeugdherberg, woning, jeugdhuis, bibliotheek en herberg. Van 2003 tot 2006 werden restauratiewerken uitgevoerd. Het gebouw wordt nu gebruikt voor tentoonstellingen, seminaries, feesten enz.
