Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd de stad grotendeels verwoest door geallieerde bombardementen, maar na de oorlog werd Münster in oude stijl herbouwd. Zo ook werd de kathedraal of Dom van Münster geviseerd. In zijn boek De Bommenwerpmaffia wijdt auteur Malcolm Gladwell daar verder over uit. 'Als de Britten de Duitse oorlogdindustrie wilden treffen vonden ze het vanzelfsprekend om in één moeite ook de Duitse arbeiders te "onthuizen". Zo werd de burgerbevolking een legitiem doelwit.' In Münster was echter niet eens oorlogsindustrie gevestigd. Het doelwit was deze Dom. En dat op zondagochtend, wanneer de mensen er de mis bijwoonden.
