Het station bevindt zich aan de in 1884 door de Pruisische Staatsspoorwegen geopende en in dit gedeelte grotendeels in 1979 stilgelegde spoorlijn Wuppertal–Wichlinghausen–Hattingen, direct aan het noordportaal van de Scheetunnel. Van het station liep ook een zijlijn naar Silschede.
Het ontvangstgebouw stamt uit 1886, is tegenwoordig in privébezit en is als monument beschermd. Vanwege zijn originele staat vonden in oktober 1976 opnames voor een ZDF-televisiefilm daar plaats.
