Oorspronkelijk werd het Offlumermeer gedurende tientallen jaren gebruikt als mijngebied voor zand en grind. Daarna werd het geleidelijk aan aan het publiek overgedragen. Tegenwoordig biedt het meer na zijn herinrichting in het kader van de Regio in 2004 een exclusieve en toch natuurlijke omgeving in de schaduw van voormalige industriële ruïnes.
Met zijn strandpromenade en een breed strand is het de perfecte bestemming voor toeristen uit heel NRW, evenals voor inwoners van Neuenkirchen en de omgeving. Vanaf het strand of de terrassen van het See Café kan het hele meer bijna overzien worden. Van hieruit kan men ook in de verte, in de uitgestrektheid van het Münsterland, over velden en luchten dwalen.
