Oprindeligt blev Offlumer Sø brugt som et udvindingsområde for sand og grus i årtier. Derefter blev det gradvist overdraget til offentligheden. I dag tilbyder søen, siden sin omdannelse i forbindelse med Regionale i 2004, en eksklusiv og alligevel naturnær atmosfære i skyggen af tidligere industriruiner.
Med sin strandpromenade og en bred badestrand er det det perfekte udflugtsmål for turister fra hele NRW samt lokale fra Neuenkirchen og omegn. Fra stranden eller terrasserne på See Café kan man næsten overskue hele søen. Herfra kan man også svæve ud mod det fjerne, ind i de vidtstrakte områder af Münsterland over marker og enge.
