De Joodse begraafplaats is de oudste nog bestaande begraafplaats van Weimar. Hier vonden al in de 12e eeuw de eerste begrafenissen plaats. Het ligt in de Jacobsvorstadt, die in de middeleeuwen buiten de stadsmuren pelgrims naar Santiago de Compostela mogelijkheden voor overnachting bood. De grafplaatsen zijn op het terrein rondom de Jakobskirche geordend.
Van 1530 tot 1818 was het de enige begraafplaats van Weimar, die toen een veel grotere omvang had. Nadat in 1818 de “Nieuwe Begraafplaats voor het Vrouwentore” was aangelegd, werden veel van de graven geëgaliseerd. Vanaf 1840 vonden er geen begrafenissen meer plaats op de Joodse begraafplaats, daarna verviel de begraafplaats langzaam. De stad Weimar nam het later over en liet de vroegere begraafplaats rond 1927 omvormen tot een tuinbouwcomplex.
