De Abdij van Corvey was een tot de Nederrijns-Westfaalse Kreits behorende rijksabdij binnen het Heilige Roomse Rijk. Vanaf de 9de eeuw had Corvey een 'Standardbewidmung' wat inhield dat het behoorde tot de Karolingische rijksabdijen. Tot 1792 had de abt een prelatenzetel in de Kreis, vanaf 1794 had de bisschop van Corvey een geestelijke vorstenzetel.
