De Neanderthaler is een uitgestorven verwant van de anatomisch moderne mens. Hij ontwikkelde zich in Europa - parallel aan de Homo sapiens in Afrika - uit een gezamenlijke Afrikaanse voorouder van het geslacht Homo en bevond zich tijdelijk in grote delen van Zuid-, Midden- en Oost-Europa. Blijkbaar hebben de Neanderthalers in de loop van de laatste ijstijd hun oorspronkelijk uitsluitend Europese vestigingsgebied uitgebreid tot West-Azië, in delen van Centraal-Azië en zelfs tot in het Altai-gebied. De DNA-sequencing van het Neanderthaler-genoom heeft aanwijzingen opgeleverd voor meerdere genstroom tussen Neanderthalers en Homo sapiens.
De Neanderthalers maakten gereedschappen van steen en hout en voeden zich - afhankelijk van de klimatologische omstandigheden - deels met jachtprooi, deels met plantaardig voedsel. Ook beheersten ze het vuur.
