De gemalen Harlesiel werd tussen 1953 en 1957 gebouwd en vormt de voorlopige afsluiting van een eeuwlange dijkbouw van de Harlebucht. Het scheidt tegenwoordig de buitenhaven van de binnenhaven in Harlesiel. Voor de doorgang zijn sluizen aangebracht.
Het gebied van de Harlebucht wordt via de gemalen Harlesiel ontwaterd. De vier turbines kunnen maximaal 54.000 m³ water per uur uit de diepte in de opslagpolder pompen en deze binnen slechts zes uur vullen. Bij eb wordt de toegang tot Wangersiel geopend, zodat de Harle ongehinderd in het Waddengebied kan afwateren. Was in het begin een bewaker verantwoordelijk voor de installatie, tegenwoordig wordt het gemaal via een automatische meetinstallatie bediend. Het gemaal Harlesiel ontwaterd vandaag de dag een gebied van 22.000 hectare land uit een waternet van driehonderd kilometer lengte.
