De Johanniskerk is de oudste kerk in Mainz, na de Dom van Trier de op één na oudste bewaard gebleven bisschopskerk op Duitse bodem en de enige bewaard gebleven dombouw uit Merovingische, laat-karolingische en vroeg-ottonische tijden in Duitsland. Sinds de consecratie in het jaar 910 tot de consecratie van de iets verder naar het oosten gelegen Dom van Mainz in 1036, was zij de bisschopskerk van het aartsbisdom Mainz en werd daarom later ook wel Aldeduom genoemd. De Johanniskerk werd in 1828 overgenomen door de evangelische gemeente. De beschermheilige is de Heilige Johannes de Doper.
