Johanniskirken er den ældste kirke i Mainz, næst efter domkirken i Trier den næstældste bevarede biskopskirke på tysk jord og den eneste bevarede domkirkebygning fra merovingerne, sene karolingere og tidlige ottoniske tider i Tyskland. Siden indvielsen i året 910 frem til indvielsen af den lidt længere mod øst beliggende domkirke i Mainz i 1036, var den biskopskirke i ærkebispedømmet Mainz og blev derfor senere også kaldt Aldeduom. Johanniskirken blev i 1828 overtaget af den evangeliske menighed. Beskyttelseshelgen er den hellige Johannes Døberen.
