Het natuurreservaat Lüneburger Heide is een van de oudste en grootste natuurreservaten van Duitsland en het oudste en grootste natuurreservaat in Niedersachsen. Op 29 december 1921 werd voor het eerst een gebied van vier vierkante mijl van de Lüneburger Heide door de Pruisische regering tot natuurpark verklaard, op 12 januari 1922 trad de beschermingsverordening in werking. De huidige verordening van de districtsregering Lüneburg "over het natuurreservaat 'Lüneburger Heide' in de districten Harburg en Soltau-Fallingbostel" dateert van 17 juni 1993.
Het gebied, dat ook wel natuurpark Lüneburger Heide wordt genoemd, kwam voor de uitbreiding van het natuurpark Lüneburger Heide in 2007 overeen met dit gebied.
