Het herenhuis Harkotten van Korff werd in 1806 in opdracht van het paar Friedrich-Anton en Rosine Frhr. en Frfr. von Korff zu Harkotten in neoclassicistische stijl gebouwd door de architect Adolf von Vagedes (1777 – 1842).
Voor de schilderachtige vormgeving van de binnenmuren van de begane grond van het herenhuis werd in de jaren 1814 – 1816 de hofschilder Philipp Ferdinand Ludwig Bartscher (1749 – 1823) uit Rietberg ingeschakeld.
Vanwege de uitgebreide bevindingen van contemporaine muurschilderingen en het regionale belang van de Rietberger kunstenaar is de binneninrichting van het historische gebouw waardevol en van publiek belang. Het herenhuis Harkotten werd in 2017 erkend als een monument van nationale betekenis.
