Die Petersburg was een citadel in het zuidoosten van de stad Osnabrück. Het bestond in de eerste helft van de 17e eeuw tijdens de Dertigjarige Oorlog en moest helpen om de contrareformatie in de stad door te voeren.
In 1618 bevestigde keizer Ferdinand II de privileges van de stad Osnabrück en de vrijheid voor de Augsburgse confessie. Bij het begin van de Dertigjarige Oorlog verklaarde de stad haar neutraliteit. In oktober 1625 werd Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg tot bisschop van Osnabrück gekozen. Hij probeerde net als zijn voorganger de contrareformatie in Osnabrück door te voeren. In 1628 kwam Franz Wilhelm met de katholieke liga de stad binnen en gaf opdracht om de citadel Petersburg te bouwen, ter versterking van de Osnabrückse vestingwerken en als eigen residentie.
