Één van de merkwaardigste sociaal-geografische studies over Oost en West leverde de volgende merkwaardige vaststelling op. Vrouwen in Oost-Duitsland rapporteerden meer orgasmes dan West-Duitse. Over de verklaring voor dit fenomeen is er vanzelfsprekend veel debat. Een zeer populair handboek over seksuele opvoeding dat reeds gepubliceerd werd in 1969 in Oost-Duitsland zou een verklaring kunnen zijn. Dat boek gaf expliciete instructies over hoe je een vrouw moet bevredigen, met als doel een egalitaire verdeling van genot. In vele westerse landen kwam dit soort info voor opgroeiende jeugd een halve eeuw later, of is er nog steeds niet.
