De Universiteit Helmstedt bestond van 1576 tot 1810. Ze kwam voort uit een Pädagogium Illustre, dat in 1571 in Gandersheim werd opgericht en op 6 juli 1574 naar Helmstedt werd verplaatst.
De Academia Julia werd door hertog Julius, prins van Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, in Helmstedt opgericht als de eerste expliciet protestantse universiteit in de noordelijke helft van Duitsland en werd op 15 oktober 1576 geopend met een plechtige dienst in de St.-Stephani-kerk. Rektoren waren traditioneel altijd de hertogen en prinsen van Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. De aftrap werd gegeven door de twaalfjarige zoon van de oprichter, de latere hertog Heinrich Julius.
