L'université de Helmstedt a существé de 1576 à 1810. Elle est née d'un Pädagogium Illustre, fondé en 1571 à Gandersheim et transféré à Helmstedt le 6 juillet 1574.
L'Academia Julia a été fondée par le duc Julius, prince de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, à Helmstedt en tant que première université clairement protestante dans la moitié nord de l'Allemagne et a été inaugurée le 15 octobre 1576 par un service religieux solennel dans l'église Saint-Étienne. Par tradition, les recteurs étaient toujours les ducs et princes de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Le premier fut le fils de douze ans du fondateur, le futur duc Heinrich Julius.
