Het Max-Planck-Institut voor Kolonderzoek is gevestigd in Mülheim aan de Ruhr. De onderzoekfocus ligt op de ontwikkeling van selectieve katalysatoren. In tegenstelling tot de andere Max-Planck-Instituten, die juridisch niet-autonome delen van de Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zijn, is dit instituut een non-profit, zelfstandige rechtspersoonlijke stichting van privaat recht. Het doel van de stichting is het bevorderen van fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek ten behoeve van het algemeen welzijn. De stichting wordt gedragen door de Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, de stad Mülheim aan de Ruhr en de kolenindustrie.
