Het Paderborner hoogplateau vormt geologisch gezien de zuidoostelijke afsluiting van de Westfaalse baai en tegelijkertijd het grootste kalk- en grootste karstlandschap van Westfalen. In de natuurlijke indeling van de handleiding van de natuurlijke indeling van Duitsland wordt het toegewezen aan het Boven-Weserbergland in het Nedersaksische Bergland.
