De TerraZoo Rheinberg is oorspronkelijk in 1996 opgericht in de kelderruimte van de schachtinstallatie Schacht IV in Moers. Vanwege de zoologisch ongeschikte omstandigheden in de vochtige kelder nabij een disco en fitnesscentrum, vond na vijf jaar echter een verhuizing plaats naar een nieuw gebouw in de Rheinbergse wijk Winterswick. De tentoonstelling werd bijvoorbeeld uitgebreid met nijlpaardenkrokodillen uit de zoo van Duisburg en een buitenruimte met reptielen uit gematigde streken.
