Recklinghausen is zetel van de rechtbank Recklinghausen, die verantwoordelijk is voor de steden Datteln, Herten, Oer-Erkenschwick, Recklinghausen en Waltrop in de provincie Recklinghausen. In het 256 km² grote rechtsgebied wonen ongeveer 281.000 mensen. De rechtbank bevindt zich in de ruimtes van het gebouwcomplex Reitzensteinstraße 17–21, bestaande uit een in 1907 gebouwd oud gebouw in neobarokstijl en een nieuw gebouw uit de naoorlogse moderne stijl.
