Het dienstgebouw van de Directie Essen werd gebouwd voor de in 1895 opgerichte Koninklijke Spoordirectie Essen. In 1922 werd het de Reichsbahndirectie Essen. Na gedeeltelijke vernietiging tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en aanzienlijk veranderde wederopbouw was het gebouw tussen 1951 en de spoorweghervorming van 1994 de zetel van de Bundesbahndirectie Essen. Daarna stond het markante, maar niet beschermde gebouw enkele jaren leeg. Sinds oktober 2010 huisvest het een servicecentrum van de Deutsche Bank.
