L'edificio della direzione di Essen è stato costruito per la Direzione ferroviaria reale di Essen, fondata nel 1895. Nel 1922 divenne la direzione ferroviaria del Reich di Essen. Dopo un parziale smantellamento durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e una ricostruzione significativamente modificata, l'edificio è stato sede della direzione delle ferrovie federali di Essen tra il 1951 e la riforma ferroviaria del 1994. Successivamente, l'imponente edificio, che non è protetto come monumento, è rimasto vuoto per alcuni anni. Dal ottobre 2010 ospita un centro servizi della Deutsche Bank.
