Hier op het familielandgoed Tegel bracht de beroemde wetenschapper Alexander von Humboldt (geboren op 14 september 1769) zijn jeugd door in de zomermaanden. Het was eigendom van de rijke Pruisische aristocratische familie. Inb de wintermaanden verbleven ze in Berlijn. Het slot is nog altijd eigendom van afstammelingen van de familie Humboldt, maar 's maandags worden er rondleidingen gehouden. Rond het paleis ligt een park met aan de westkant het door Schinkel vormgegeven familiegraf van de Humboldts, dat een kopie van een beeld van Bertel Thorvaldsen bevat. Het origineel is in het slot te bekijken.
