Berkenlatten werd in het jaar 1607 opgericht door de familie von Arnim als een voorwerk in het gebied van de veldmark van het rond 1450 verlaten dorp Bischofshagen. Tegelijkertijd ontstond het nabijgelegen dorp Böckenberg. Tijdens de Dertigjarige Oorlog werd Berkenlatten verwoest.
Noordelijk van de plaats ligt de Wüste Kirche Berkenlatten, een kerkruïne die teruggaat op het voormalige dorp Bischofshagen. Berkenlatten is bekend om de struisvogelboerderij Berkenlatten die hier sinds 2002 is gevestigd.
