Als er één schilderij van Caspar David Friedrich in ons collectieve bewustzijn zit, is het wel ‘De wandelaar boven de nevelen’: een man in halflange jas staat op een bergtop en kijkt uit over een zee van laaghangende mist. Over de betekenis van het werk wordt al twee eeuwen gediscussieerd. Wat vaststaat, is dat Friedrich zich liet inspireren door deze berglandschappen.
