De huidige plaats Lippendorf was ooit het dorp Medewitzsch. In 1934 werden Lippendorf en Spahnsdorf bij Medewitzsch gevoegd, dat zijn Slavische naam verloor en de naam Lippendorf aannam.
Lippendorf ligt in de Leipziger laagvlakte op ongeveer 20 kilometer ten zuiden van Leipzig. In het westen bevindt zich de open mijn Verenigd Schleenhain, die hoort bij het Midden-Duitse bruinkoolgebied, en in het oosten de Pleiße.
