De pas is genoemd naar het rechtstreeks oostelijk aangrenzende Schwarzmiss, een hoogveen waaruit bronbeekjes ontspringen die naar de Enz leidende Kegelbach. De pas doorkruist hier een hoofdkam van het Zwarte Woud in noord-zuid richting.
Een beetje oostelijk van de pas steekt de bijbehorende pasweg het dorp Kaltenbronn over, en één kilometer ten zuidwesten van de pas bevindt zich de top van de Hohloh met de Hohlohturm.
