Het vrouwensticht Gernrode werd in 959 opgericht en bestond tot in de 17e eeuw. Het was rijksmiddelen en gelijkgesteld aan de status van een rijksabdij. In de vroege moderne tijd maakte het als rijksstand deel uit van de boven-saksische rijkskring en het Rijnlandse rijksprälatencollege.
Markgraaf Gero stichtte in 959 op zijn kasteel Geronisroth aan de noordoostrand van de Harz een kanunnikenklooster. Aangezien zijn enige zoon zonder erfgenamen was overleden, vermaakte Gero het klooster al zijn privébezit. De eerste abdis werd Hathui, de weduwe van zijn zoon Siegfried. Zij stamde uit het geslacht der Billungers en was een nicht van koningin Mathilde. Het klooster moest ook dienen als graf en voor de voortdurende gebedsherdenking van de stichter. Waarschijnlijk werd in 961 begonnen met de bouw van de abdijkerk.
