Peter Fechter werd op 17 augustus 1962 neergeschoten door GDR-grenswachters terwijl hij en een collega probeerden over de Muur naar West-Berlijn te klimmen. Ernstig verwond viel hij terug op het grensgebied aan de voet van de Muur en lag daar zonder medische hulp terwijl hij langzaam bloedde. De politie van West-Berlijn mocht niet ingrijpen, en ook de grenstroepen van de westerse bondgenoten bij Checkpoint Charlie hielden zich afzijdig. Hij werd pas bijna een uur later door de GDR-grenswachters weggedragen. Zijn collega kon ongedeerd over de Muur ontsnappen.
