De Berkelroute loopt door ongerepte gebieden en leidt keer op keer naar het verleden. De Berkel ontspringt in Billerbeck, aan de voet van de Baumbergen. Ze stroomt door Coesfeld, Gescher, Stadtlohn en Vreden, voordat ze Nederland bereikt. Via Eibergen, Borculo, Lochem en Almen mondt ze bij Zutphen uit in de IJssel.
Een tussenstop waard is het natuurreservaat Zwillbrocker Venn met zijn flamingokolonie. Zin in cultuurgeschiedenis? Ga dan naar de klokkengemeente Gescher, de pottenbakkersstad Stadtlohn of het Hamaland-museum in Vreden. Eén gemeente heeft zelfs de naam van de Berkel gekregen: Berkelland. Hier nodigen dorpskerken, watermolens en andere historische bouwwerken uit tot bezichtiging. En ook het museumlandschap biedt echte zeldzaamheden, zoals het brandweermuseum of het kristalmuseum in Borculo.
