1998 wählte die Kultur Ruhr GmbH im Rahmen der IBA Emscher Park weitere Bergbauhalden zur künstlerischen Gestaltung als Landmarken aus. Dr. Brockhaus, Direktor des Lehmbruck Museums Duisburg, bat den Künstler Otto Piene, die in traditionsreichem Industrieumfeld herausragend liegende Halde Rheinpreußen als Landmarke zu gestalten. Pienes Entwurf sieht auf rot ausgeleuchteter, das Umgebungsniveau um 70 m überragenden Halde, einen 30 m hohen Turm in Form einer übergroßen stählernen Sicherheitslampe der Bergleute, dem "Geleucht", vor. In der Dunkelheit leuchtet der Lichtturm über der roten Halde. Rot verdeutlicht die Energie der Kohle und die Glut des Stahls, des Motors der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung.
