Wist je dat Alexander von Humboldt op vele plekken langs de hellingen van de Chimborazo een potje met water aan de kook bracht. Dat was een toen gekende techniek om de hoogte te bepalen. Door een thermometer in het water te stoppen en te bepalen bij welke temperatuur het water kookt, kian je de hoogte bepalen. Bij grotere hoogte heb je ene lagere luchtdruk. En die lagere luchtdruk zorgt ervoor dat water bij lagere temperaturen sneller kookt. Dus op die indirecte manier kan je de hoogte bepalen.
