Portugalete is een gemeente in de Spaanse provincie Biskaje, in de regio Baskenland, met een oppervlakte van 3 km². Portugalete vormt een deel van Groot Bilbao en telde in 2001 51.066 inwoners.De Rivier Nervión stroomt tussen twee steden, Portugalete aan de linkeroever en Las Arenas aan de rechteroever. Vanwege de grote natuurlijke riviermonding, El Abra, was Portugalete in de middeleeuwen een belangrijke zeehaven. In 1511 kreeg de Poort van Bilbao handelsrechten, waarna het belang van Portugalete als haven afnam.
