Ponferrada is een gemeente in de Spaanse provincie León in de regio Castilië en León met een oppervlakte van 283,17 km². Ponferrada telt 66.447 inwoners .
De rivier Sil stroomt door de stad. Ponferrada is de laatste grotere plaats op de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. In Romeinse tijden werd in de nabijheid van Ponferrada goud gewonnen, zie Las Médulas. In de middeleeuwen was Ponferrada korte tijd het Spaanse hoofdkwartier van de Tempeliers, die een groot kasteel in de plaats bezaten. In later tijden werd er onder meer kolen gewonnen.
