De Piloña ontstaat uit de samenvloeiing van de rivieren Rio Fuensanta en Rio Viao bij 43° 21′ 22″ N, 5° 27′ 13″ W, nabij het gehucht Ceceda in de gemeente Nava. Hij mondt in Arriondas bij 43° 23′ 20″ N, 5° 11′ 4″ W uit in de Rio Sella. Commerciële scheepvaart vindt niet plaats op de Rio Sella; echter, kanoën en rafting zijn wijdverbreid.
