De huidige kathedraal Santa Maria de la Seu d'Urgell is inmiddels de vierde domkerk die op dit terrein is opgetrokken, op de primitieve West-Gotische kathedraal, op zijn 11e-eeuwse opvolger en op de Sant-Ermengol kathedraal. Zijn monumentale karakter en zijn sobere architectonische lijn, maar niet zonder een zekere weelderigheid in het beeldhouwwerk van de kloostergang en van de westgevel, maken deze tot de enige romaanse kathedraal van Catalonië en tot de voornaamste architectonische exponent van de Catalaans-romaanse stijl op zijn hoogtepunt. Deze domkerk wordt gekenmerkt door Occitaanse en Noord-Italiaanse invloeden die ook tot uiting komen in bepaalde nabijgelegen bouwwerken, waaronder de kerk Santa María de Covet in de aangrenzende landstreek Pallars Sobirà.
