Het kasteel werd gebouwd in de 17e eeuw en heeft het een stervormige plattegrond van Italiaanse invloed.
Binnen zijn er paviljoenen, barakken en reservoirs, oorspronkelijk voor buskruit; later werd het gebruikt als militaire gevangenis.
Tegenwoordig is deze vesting omgebouwd tot een grote multifunctionele culturele en recreatieve ruimte, met onder meer permanente zalen over de plaatselijke geschiedenis, tijdelijke tentoonstellingszalen en winkels en kunst- en ambachtswerkplaatsen. Er worden op de paradeplaats van het kasteel ook concerten en zomeractiviteiten gehouden.
