Zuid-Wervik is een gemeente in het Franse Noorderdepartement en telt 4697 inwoners . De plaats maakt deel uit van het arrondissement Rijsel. Aan de overkant van de Frans-Belgische grens, die gevormd wordt door de Leie, ligt het West-Vlaamse Wervik.In 1667 werd Zuid-Wervik, feitelijk een voorstad van Wervik, veroverd door de troepen van Lodewijk XIV van Frankrijk, en in 1713 werd de grens in verband met de Vrede van Utrecht definitief, waarmee de stad in tweeën werd gedeeld. De Leie werd een staatsgrens en scheidde de stad in een Frans Wervik en een Oostenrijks Wervik. Voor de bevolking bleef de stad echter één geheel. De Sint-Medarduskerk bleef voor beide stadsdelen, bijvoorbeeld de parochiekerk. Pas in 1802 werd Zuid-Wervik een zelfstandige parochie.
