Het kasteel werd in 1188 gesticht door koning Hendrik II van Engeland en werd in 1195 vernietigd door koning Filips II van Frankrijk. De locatie werd in de 14e eeuw hersteld. Het kasteel werd later voor een groot deel herbouwd in 1433 door Charles des Marets. Het kasteel bestaat uit een vihoekige omheining met ronde flanktorens en een lagere binnenplaats aangrenzend. De grote westtoren dateert wellicht uit de 14e eeuw en diende als donjon. Verschillende architectonische stijlen zijn vertegenwoordigd, en vuursteen en zandsteen worden in de gebouwen gebruikt. Een bakstenen bastion en verschillende andere gebouwen zijn toegevoegd aan de oorspronkelijke omheining.
